1. The haflinger

There has been some development among the heavier breeds. This means that i.e., the Haflinger horse has become much lighter and is today a very descent riding pony.

The kindness in this breed is obvious when you look at this sweet Haflinger. Her name is Hallie. Photo: Private

General abilities

Overall description: “It is a heavy horse with an elegant look. It has a powerful and compact build and a lot of strength and endurance.

In other words, we are dealing with a body builder who keeps going at the gym no matter how much weight the coach insists on adding to the training.

Temperament

Overall description: “The Haflinger is a compliant horse, wise, hardworking, kind and confident towards people.”

WE LOVE THE HAFLINGER BECAUSE: You may have ridden a Haflinger at the local riding school, and often also been fooled by this smart, little horse. It is a master at getting all the treats, eating grass without permission and run between jumps in the arena. But once you have gained its respect - you will have friend for life. The Haflinger is just really smart.

2. The icelandic horse

This small, robust horse is definitely the popular boy or girl in the class. More and more riders show interest in this tough horse and for a good reason, we believe.

General abilities

Overall description: “The Icelandic horse is strong, and its legs are short and robust with powerful hoofs. The ears are small and pointed, mane and tail are thick – ideal for dealing with cold weather."

This is a horse from the cold north. It is definitely not delicate and was it a human it would not complain about a minor skin abrasion from playing in the school yard.

Temperament

Overall description: “It is very tough, strong and do not demand any special care. It is seldom ill, calm to handle, curious, friendly and somewhat independent.”

In other words, you do want to be friends with an Icelandic horse because it is very uncomplicated. Here at Malgré Tout Media we have also experienced that you cannot be sure that this horse actually wants to be friends with you or your other pony (if you have one of course). It is sometimes a bit selective in its friendships. But that is how it is when you are the popular one that everybody loves. This horse is cooler than most, especially because it can brag about having two extra gaits.

3. Danish warmblood

This breed is a mix of many different breeds and is the most popular one in Denmark. It is a very confident and flashy horse and therefore also very coveted in its native country. And in the rest of the world for that matter - not the least among professional riders. It is like the hot girl or boy in school. Always good looking with the newest trends and clever observations. Really funny. We all kind of want to be this one.

General abilities

Overall description: “Almost flawless. Noble and strong. The head is beautiful with a kind and intelligent expression.”

This is what we mean. This is the cool over-achiever who is of course also the best in school and the most pretty one. It is easy to feel a little jealous of the Danish Warmblood.

Temperament

Overall description: “The Danish Warmblood has great success at top-level competitions. It is famous for having a very good temper. They learn easily and are very sociable with a great sparkle, personality and three impressive gaits.

Well, there is not much more to say - we kind of wish we were a Danish Warmblood.

4. Shetland pony

This tiny bandit is often fixed inventory at most riding schools and actually also in private stables. Because, let us be honest, they are difficult to resist. Or are they? They look extremely cute and most of the time they are. BUT there is no doubt that this is a very independent horse who wants to be in charge of everything. Which way to go and whether it can eat grass in the arena even you have not permitted it.

General abilities

Overall description: “The Shetland pony is often used as a children’s pony and they are good at pulling small wagons. Some people keep them as pets. And they are actually good company for other horses and are especially good for nervous horses because they have a calming effect.

The Shetland pony is like the friend you always go to when you need a shoulder to lean on. But you should also be aware that this friend will be honest with you and tell it to you straight. A pretty good friend in our opinion.

Temperament

Overall description: “They can be dominating and stubborn. They are not always so easy to handle and have a tendency to bite. But if you find one with a good temper (and there are lots of them) they are great riding ponies for children and a fabulous pet for the whole family.”

In other words: You can be sure that this pony will not be afraid of a conflict. What you see is what you get, and that makes everything easier. Right? This horse is the colleague at work or friend who does not care what other people think of him, and he is not afraid of telling people off.

5. The arabian horse

A true beauty for the eye and perhaps the breed most little girls and boys have wished for. Few of us probably had an Arabian horse and for a good reason. The beautiful horse demands an experienced rider. Of course, there are many different varieties of this breed, but we will just discuss it in general.

General Abilities

Overall description: "The Arabian horse is ga reat riding horse in most disciplines but is especially suitable for Distance Riding because of its endurance. They are also good family horses and good jumpers as long as it is not too high because of its fairly small average size of about 150 cm. The Arabian horse is more or less the fancy gymnastic girl or boy. Those, who without hesitation just got to the top of a tree or did walking in handstand a cross the school yard.

Temperament

Overall description: “Arabian horses are sensitive and thoughtful. Not only towards humans but also the way they chose to deal with a challenge or a new task. They are brave and will do their very best for people they trust.”

You may recognize the experience with a friend where you have talked and talked and actually forgotten to ask your friend how she is doing. The Arabien horse is that friend who always listens to your emotions despite of having much more interesting life stories herself than you do. She does not make a fuss about getting noticed. She is the friend you can always count once you have gained her trust.
